On 9 February 2025, some team members at Hugill & Ip laced up their running shoes for the Standard Chartered Marathon, not just for the challenge of the race, but to support a vital cause: raising funds for HELP for Domestic Workers.
A commitment to the community
Hugill & Ip is dedicated to social responsibility, and this month is focusing their efforts on HELP, an NGO that advocates for migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong. These workers often face significant challenges, including exploitation and a lack of basic rights. By participating in the marathon, the running team aimed to raise awareness and funds to improve their living conditions and provide essential support services.
The vital role of domestic helpers
Domestic helpers play a crucial role in the well-being of many families in Hong Kong. With about 400,000 domestic workers in the territory who represent about 10% of the total workforce in Hong Kong, they are essential in contributing to raise children, care for the elderly, and manage household tasks.
Their contributions enable working women to pursue careers, enhancing family incomes and overall economic stability. Households with domestic helpers can save up to 20 hours a week on chores, significantly improving work-life balance. As Hong Kong’s population ages and the demand for childcare rises, the need for domestic helpers continues to grow, reaching over 600,000 helpers needed in the next few decades. However, these workers often sacrifice their own family time, leaving their countries to provide for their loved ones back home.
Preparing for the marathon
As the event approaches, the team trained rigorously, embodying the spirit of perseverance and teamwork.
Partner Alfred Ip shared, “Training for the marathon has not only strengthened my resolve but also deepened my commitment to the cause. Every mile we run is a step toward helping those in need.” Another team member, Kelly Merris, added, “I’m excited to combine my passion for running with a cause that truly matters. It’s motivating to know that our efforts can make a real difference in the lives of domestic workers.” Runner Saajandeep Singh also remarked, “This experience is about more than just fitness; it’s about solidarity and raising our voices for those who often go unheard.”
Each runner is committed to tackling the distance while making a positive impact through their efforts.
Fundraising goals
Hugill & Ip has set ambitious fundraising goals to support HELP for Domestic Workers. The team has already raised over $120,000 for the initiative, which directly contributes to providing critical resources, including legal assistance, counselling, and emergency support for domestic workers in need.
Celebrating together
After the marathon, running solicitors, domestic helpers, and several individuals from HELP for Domestic Workers gathered at the NGO booth in Victoria Park to celebrate their collective achievements. This event served as a joyful reunion, highlighting the dedication and strength of everyone involved. It was a great opportunity to share stories, express gratitude, and reinforce the community’s commitment to supporting migrant domestic workers. The atmosphere was filled with camaraderie and hope, as everyone reflected on the impact of their efforts.
Another bridge to empower migrant domestic workers
The “Bridges to Empowerment” programme, championed by Hugill & Ip, is an initiative aimed at empowering minorities and underrepresented communities in Hong Kong.
This programme focuses on breaking down barriers to legal knowledge and resources by providing educational support and establishing networks. Key objectives include creating tailored resources for minority groups, building relationships with community leaders, promoting participation in social and legal issues, and encouraging diversity within the community.
The programme also features events such as legal training, highlighting the importance of collaboration between legal professionals and NGOs to address the needs of affected individuals.
Join us in making a difference
We urge our clients, friends, and community members to continue supporting this important cause. Every contribution – no matter the size – helps empower domestic workers and ensures they receive the assistance and rights they deserve. Your generosity can make a lasting impact on their lives.
Together, we can keep running for a cause and make a meaningful difference above and beyond the Standard Chartered Marathon!
